Workers’ mobility to and from their places of work accounts for a large proportion of the total mobility in big cities.

Large-scale movements in big cities increase certain factors, such as the accident rate, exposure to polluted air and noise which directly affect the physical and social well-being of workers.

What is ecomobility or sustainable mobility?

Ecomobility is the series of actions relating to the promotion of more sustainable ways of travelling, with the main aim of protecting the environment and caring for the well-being of the population.

Opting for ecomobility is essential for encouraging green, sustainable transport to places of work, minimising journeys, fostering healthy habits and promoting e-mobility.

How can I commute to work more sustainably?

Taking your car is not the only option for getting to work. Here are four ideas for getting to work in a more sustainable way:

  1. Use a bicycle or walk to work, thereby reducing the number of journeys by polluting vehicles.
  2. Travel by public transport to avoid traffic jams and the stress associated with traffic congestion in cities.
  3. Car share, thereby contributing to a more efficient use of private vehicles while reducing the economic cost of journeys in polluting vehicles.
  4. Use electric vehicles, optimising their energy and activating the Eco mode in hybrid vehicles.

What can my company do to promote ecomobility with a commuting plan?

In this shift towards a more sustainable model, companies also have a very important role to play. Here are some of the actions that can be taken in order to encourage ecomobility:

  1. Make people aware of the importance of a healthy lifestyle, including good physical and emotional habits (a healthy diet, physical exercise, and psychosocial management) through the company's internal channels.
  2. If journeys need to be made during the working day, make the company's vehicle fleet electric and give bonuses to employees who travel in electric vehicles.
  3. Minimise the need for journeys, through flexible working hours and teleworking.
  4. Encourage car sharing among employees, in order to reduce expenses and increase the cost-effectiveness of getting around in a private combustion-engine car.

There are many advantages to putting into practice green, sustainable commuting plans, because in addition to improving the quality of the city's air it can also improve the quality of employees’ lives.
